Slate & Tile Roofing Specialists in Boardman, OH
Boardman was founded in the late 1790s by Elijah Boardman as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. It remained a farming township through the 19th century, before its mid-20th-century retail boom. A handful of the township's oldest surviving homes predate that boom.
They may still carry natural slate or clay tile roofing.
These materials were the premium choice of their time for good reason. Pennsylvania hard-vein slate is a dense, fine-grained stone quarried from the state's Slate Belt. Clay tile behaves similarly when the flashing is maintained.
TriState Home Consulting Group provides slate and tile inspection, repair, restoration, and full replacement in Boardman. Our approach is preservation-first. We save original material when the roof structure and tile condition support it.
If you own an aging slate or tile roof in Boardman, one decision matters most. Is the system restorable, or has it reached end-of-life and needs full replacement?
Restorable conditions include isolated broken or slipped tiles and failed flashing at chimneys and valleys. Minor deck issues confined to specific areas also count.
End-of-life conditions look different. Think widespread delamination or powdering of soft slate, or extensive broken tile across multiple roof planes. Deck deterioration that prevents proper re-nailing also puts a roof in that category.
TriState's free inspection separates these conditions honestly. We don't push replacement on a roof worth saving. We don't patch a roof that needs to come off.
Matching Slate for Older Boardman Homes
The hardest part of slate repair on older Boardman homes is material matching. Pennsylvania hard slate came from quarries in multiple regions. Bangor/Pen Argyl slate in the Eastern Pennsylvania Slate Belt was common in residential construction from the 1880s through the 1930s.
Some of it made its way into homes throughout the Mahoning Valley, including Boardman's older farmhouses. Many of these quarries no longer operate in the same capacity. But reclaimed and remnant material still exists in the market.
TriState has sourcing relationships for matching thickness, color, and texture to existing installations. We won't put a visibly wrong replacement tile on an older roof and tell you it's acceptable.
Synthetic Slate for Boardman Homes
Maybe you want the look of natural slate without the structural requirements, sourcing challenges, and cost. Modern synthetic slate products have improved a lot in the past decade.
High-quality engineered polymer or fiber cement synthetic slate is now tested to Class 4 impact standards. That's worth knowing given the hail the Mahoning Valley sees.
Synthetic slate is also much lighter than natural slate. That makes it suitable for roof structures never designed for slate load. For a full replacement where historical accuracy isn't the main concern, synthetic slate is a legitimate premium option.
