At the establishment of township government in 1818 leaders agreed on Thorndike, after a man who had promised to donate land for a town square. He never followed through, so residents petitioned to rename the township Brimfield in honor of John Wyles Jr., who had inherited his father's land interests and lived in Brimfield, Massachusetts. A post office called Brimfield operated from 1834 until 1907. The census-designated place of Brimfield sits at the center of the township, and parts of neighboring Kent and Tallmadge now cover land that was once township ground.
