Cortland is a Trumbull County city of 7,105 people, 19 miles north of Youngstown. It covers 4.25 square miles, all of it land, at roughly 1,037 feet. The city lies along the eastern shore of Mosquito Creek Lake and the accompanying Mosquito Lake State Park. It was known as Baconsburg through the nineteenth century before incorporating under its present name in 1873.

Samuel Bacon settled the area by acquiring land along the Mahoning River in 1807, trading it in 1816 for a lumber mill that relied on a dam built in 1809. The area became known as Baconsburg, and it incorporated as the village of Cortland in 1873, named for the city in New York. J. H. Post and H. G. Scovill later built a larger dam that powered a custom and planing mill and a grist mill. Minister Orrin Gates, from Cortland, New York, helped convert the area's oldest church into a Disciple Church in 1832.
