About Mantua, OH

Mantua is a village of 1,001 people in northern Portage County, along the Cuyahoga River. It covers 1.40 square miles of land inside a total area of 1.42 square miles, at roughly 1,096 feet. The Cuyahoga River flows through the southern part of the village. It was formed from portions of Mantua Township in the Connecticut Western Reserve and is part of the Akron metropolitan area.

The land that became the village was owned by the Tappan family of Tappanville, later Ravenna, who renamed their northern county properties Mantua after making the Grand Tour of Europe in 1842. The town was laid out in the 1840s as Mantua Station, a stop on the Cleveland and Mahoning Valley Railroad, and incorporated as Mantua in 1898. The village is named after the Italian city of Mantua, in honor of Napoleon, who captured it in early 1797 at the end of the Siege of Mantua.
