Niles is a Trumbull County city of 18,443 people, at the confluence of the Mahoning River and Mosquito Creek. The town was first called Heaton's Furnace, then Nilestown after Hezekiah Niles, editor of the Weekly Register, and the name was shortened to Niles in 1843. Heaton built a forge and later a charcoal blast furnace just east of what is now the city's central park, on the west side of Mosquito Creek, and is credited with producing the first bar iron in Ohio. Niles is the birthplace of William McKinley, the 25th president.
