Norton is a city of 11,673 people in southwestern Summit County, with a 4.4-acre district extending into Wayne County. It covers 20.16 square miles of land inside a total area of 20.49 square miles, at roughly 1,106 feet. The township was known as Town 1, Range 12 of the Western Reserve. Norton Township was organized in 1818 as part of Wolf Creek Township, which then covered present-day Norton, Copley, Wadsworth, Sharon, Guilford and Montville townships. It was surveyed by Joseph Darrow, plotted into half-square-mile lots, and named for Birdseye Norton, one of the township's original owners. The first two settlers, James Robinson and John Cahow, arrived in 1810 and bought lots 19 and 20. The first marriage in the township was between Robinson and Lois Bates in the autumn of 1814, and Cahow built the first tavern on his lot.
