Poland is a village of 2,463 people in eastern Mahoning County, a suburb about 7 miles south of Youngstown. It covers 1.63 square miles of land inside a total area of 1.65 square miles, at roughly 1,040 feet. The community traces to 1798 and sits within Poland Township, surveyed as township 1, range 1 of the Western Reserve. It is part of the Youngstown-Warren metropolitan area.

Poland Township was surveyed in 1796 and registered as township 1, range 1 of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Turhand Kirtland, a member of the surveying group led by Moses Cleaveland, is considered to have founded the community in 1798. The earliest settlers came mainly from Connecticut and Pennsylvania. An early grist mill was built on Yellow Creek in 1802 by Jonathan Fowler, whose family was the first to settle in the village. Poland was named in honor of the country of Poland for its assistance during the American Revolutionary War.
