He built a settlement of log cabins before returning to Connecticut in the summer of 1800, then came back newly married later that year. It was Tappan's wife Nancy Wright who suggested naming the settlement after Ravenna, Italy, and she lobbied for it to be made the county seat when plans for Portage County were announced in 1806.
