The twenty-five-mile-square parcel, first known as Township 4, Range 2, was surveyed in 1798 under the Connecticut Land Company, with Uriel Holmes Jr., Ephraim Root and Timothy Burr as its original proprietors. Three of the company's surveyors settled here with their families in 1799. Vienna is the only township of that name in Ohio. Vienna Township and Fowler Township created a joint school district in 1961, now the Mathews Local School District, whose three schools were each named after a revered local schoolteacher.
