Windham is a village of 1,666 people in eastern Portage County. It covers 2.06 square miles, all of it land, at roughly 965 feet. Though officially part of the Akron metropolitan area, it is closer to Youngstown than Akron and only 12.8 miles from Warren, nearer than the county seat at Ravenna. Windham Academy, chartered here on February 19, 1835, was the 44th academy chartered in Ohio.

The land was owned by Caleb Strong before 1811 as part of his Ohio Company of Associates holdings. On September 11, 1810 a group of sixteen men met at the home of Thatcher Conant in Becket, Massachusetts to discuss buying land in Ohio, and became known as the Beckett Land Company. In 1942 the U.S. government chose Windham as the site of an army camp for workers at the newly built Ravenna Arsenal. The village went on to record the largest population increase of any municipality in the nation over the 1940s, at 1,148.7 percent.
