Your Siding Takes the Weather So the House Doesn't

Siding is the part of your house that meets the weather head-on, every day, for decades. Across Western PA and Eastern Ohio, that means freeze-thaw cycles all winter and humidity all summer. It also means the wind and hail that come with this region's storms.

Give it enough years and panels crack at the ends. Fasteners work loose, and whole sections start pulling away from the wall.

TriState Home Consulting Group handles siding replacement the same way we handle roofing. We pull the old material and look at what's behind it. We fix anything structural before the new product goes on, then install with proper housewrap and trim.

Materials We Install

Vinyl siding is the most common choice across this region. It's low-maintenance, fairly priced, and comes in a wide range of profiles and colors.

Need to match an existing section or keep a certain neighborhood look? There are far more profile options today than there were 20 years ago.

Insulated vinyl adds a foam backing behind the panel. That adds stiffness and some R-value. It matters most on older homes with little wall insulation.

Fiber cement siding (James Hardie and equivalent) is a premium option. It's made from cement, sand, and cellulose fiber, not PVC, so it's denser and heavier than vinyl.

Because of that, it behaves differently in cold weather and under impact. It also takes paint instead of carrying color through the panel.

Steel and composite panels are the heaviest option. Metal doesn't rot, and it isn't a food source for insects. It comes up most often on homes that have been hit repeatedly by storms.

Aluminum siding replacement is less common today. But it still comes up on older homes that have the original material. We can match profiles and colors where available, or replace it with a modern material.

Siding Damage — Insurance Claims

Hail leaves visible dents in aluminum siding. On vinyl siding, it can crack, puncture, or knock panels off. Wind events blow sections loose, especially on older homes fastened to looser standards than modern installs require.

Most homeowners policies cover both, though coverage and deductibles vary by carrier. Matching is the part worth asking about.

Sometimes damaged panels can't be matched to the undamaged sections. That's common on siding that's 10+ years old and out of production. When it happens, what the carrier owes can change a lot.

Pennsylvania and Ohio don't treat matching the same way. Ask your adjuster how your policy handles unmatched siding. Get the answer in writing.

We document siding the same way we document roofing. We use photos and measurements, and we link the damage to weather events.

What's Behind the Siding Is the Part That Matters

The panels are the visible half of the job. The half that decides how the wall performs is underneath. That's the housewrap, the sheathing, and the flashing at every window and door.

Rotted sheathing, missing insulation board, and failed flashing are common finds once the old siding comes off. That's especially true on older homes. Some contractors cover them back up because fixing them wasn't in the quoted price.

We spot those problems during the estimate and price them openly. That way, what we find on tear-off isn't a surprise conversation on day two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most full siding replacements on homes in Western PA and Eastern Ohio run between $8,000 and $22,000, depending on square footage, material choice, and what's found under the existing siding. Older homes often have rotted sheathing or missing housewrap behind the panels. We identify those conditions during the estimate and price them up front rather than adding them mid-job.
Usually, when the damage comes from a covered event. Hail dents and cracks siding. Wind tears sections loose. Coverage and deductibles vary by carrier, so read your own policy. Ask your adjuster specifically how your policy handles siding that can no longer be matched, and get that answer in writing — Pennsylvania and Ohio do not handle matching the same way. We photograph and document every damaged section as part of the storm inspection.
Vinyl is the most cost-effective and low-maintenance option for most homeowners. Fiber cement is a premium option — a denser board made from cement, sand, and cellulose fiber instead of PVC. For older homes with original aluminum, insulated vinyl is often a sensible replacement, since the foam backing adds some R-value on walls that have little insulation. We walk you through the trade-offs and what makes sense for your property rather than pushing one product.
Yes, and it's usually the better way to do it. Siding, trim, soffit, fascia, and gutters all meet each other at the roof edge. Running them as one job with one crew means those transitions line up and match, and it means a single insurance claim covers the whole exterior rather than two contractors documenting two halves of the same storm.
