Youngstown Homes That Were Built for Slate

Youngstown traces to John Young, who surveyed the area in 1796. He bought the 15,560-acre township on February 9, 1797, for $16,085. The settlement was formally recorded on August 19, 1802.

The area was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Many early settlers came from Connecticut, and many more were Scots-Irish arriving from Pennsylvania. Their building habits shaped the older housing here.

The village incorporated in 1848 and the city charter followed in 1867. Homes from that stretch were often roofed in slate. A good number still carry it.

Youngstown became the Mahoning County seat in 1876, when the seat moved from Canfield. Civic and residential building through that era leaned on slate and heavy tile.

The city's institutional buildings show the same tradition. Stambaugh Auditorium and the Butler Institute of American Art both sit in that architectural lineage.
