Your Siding Takes the Weather So the House Doesn't
Siding is the part of your house that meets the weather head-on, every day, for decades. Across Western PA and Eastern Ohio that means freeze-thaw cycles all winter, humidity through the summer, and the wind and hail that come with the storms this region gets. Give it enough years and panels crack at the ends, fasteners work loose, and whole sections start pulling away from the wall. TriState Home Consulting Group handles siding replacement the same way we handle roofing — we pull the old material, look at what's behind it, address anything structural before the new product goes on, and install with proper housewrap and trim.

Materials We Install
Vinyl siding is the most common choice across this region. It's low-maintenance, competitively priced, and available in a wide range of profiles and colors. If you need to match an existing section or hold to a certain neighborhood look, there are far more profile options today than there were 20 years ago. Insulated vinyl adds a foam backing behind the panel, which adds rigidity and some R-value — that matters most on older homes with little wall insulation.
Fiber cement siding (James Hardie and equivalent) is a premium option. It's made from cement, sand, and cellulose fiber rather than PVC, so it's a denser and heavier board than vinyl. That composition means it behaves differently in cold weather and under impact, and it takes paint rather than carrying color through the panel.
Steel and composite panels are the heaviest option. Metal doesn't rot, and it isn't a food source for insects. It comes up most often on homes that have been hit repeatedly by storms.
Aluminum siding replacement is less common today, but it still comes up on older homes that have the original material. We can match profiles and colors where available, or replace with a modern material.
Siding Damage — Insurance Claims
Hail dents aluminum siding visibly and can crack, puncture, or knock panels off vinyl siding. Wind events blow sections loose, particularly on older homes fastened to looser standards than modern installs require. Both are covered under most homeowners policies, though coverage and deductibles vary by carrier. Matching is the part worth asking about: when damaged panels can't be matched to the undamaged sections — common on siding that's 10+ years old and out of production — what the carrier owes can change significantly. Pennsylvania and Ohio do not treat matching the same way, so ask your adjuster how your specific policy handles unmatched siding and get the answer in writing. We document siding the same way we document roofing — photographically, by measurement, and with weather event correlation.
What's Behind the Siding Is the Part That Matters
The panels are the visible half of the job. The half that decides how the wall performs is underneath — housewrap, sheathing, and the flashing at every window and door. Rotted sheathing, missing insulation board, and failed flashing are common finds once the old siding comes off, especially on older homes. Some contractors cover them back up because addressing them wasn't in the quoted price. We identify those conditions during the estimate and price them transparently, so what we find on tear-off isn't a surprise conversation on day two.
