The village was founded in 1869, after the American Civil War, and named for William Lee of Randolph, New York. Lee discovered rich deposits of coal, ore and lime under the local soil in the early 1860s, bought the surrounding land and established the Leetonia Coal and Iron Company, laid out in the village in 1866 and 1867 with a coal mine, coke ovens and a blast furnace. Leetonia is home to one of the few remaining beehive oven sites in America. One feature of the downtown district is the steep streets heading north out of the village, and Norfolk Southern railroad tracks run east and west through it.
